De Hollandse haringvisserij tijdens de vroegmoderne tijd

Dutch Herring Fisheries in the Early Modern Period
The herring fisheries formed an important part of Holland’s economy during the early modern period. However, the available catch data is scattered and there is an abundance of explanations about the fall of Holland’s herring fisheries during the seventeenth century. The present article brings together the existing data and adds new archival sources so that a complete catch series for Holland’s herring fisheries could be constructed. An analysis of this data shows that Holland had two very different herring producing regions: the towns along the Maas river in the South and the herring fisheries centered on Enkhuizen in the North. Warfare, privateers, new investment opportunities and scarcity on the labour market were probably the most important causes leading to the decline of Holland’s herring fisheries during the seventeenth century.
Van Javasche Bank naar Bank Indonesia.
Voorbeeld uit de praktijk van indonesianisasi
J. Thomas Lindblad
The Indonesianisasi of the Java Bank
This article is about the nationalization of the Java Bank, the central bank of the former Netherlands Indies, in 1951 and the transition to the Bank Indonesia in 1953. Nationalization and the indonesianization of supervisory personnel are discussed as two forms of a wider process of gaining control over the economy in newly independent Indonesia. The account is chronological, distinguishing between the prelude (1945-1949), the road to nationalization (1950-1951), the restructuring of the central bank (1951-1953) and an epilogue about the years immediately afterwards. The argument is largely based on primary archival materials. This case study demonstrates that nationalization and indonesianization of personnel are closely interrelated but need not to occur synchronously.
Retourmigratie in een plattelands samenleving tijdens de Industriële Revolutie.
Het land van Herve (België) 1846-1900
Muriel Neven
Return-Migrations in a Rural Society during the Industrial Revolution. The Pays de Herve (Belgium) 1846-1900
The aim of this article is to understand return migrants in the Pays de Herve. The first result was unexpected: farmers were least likely to return. A second important result emerges from the multivariate analysis: family ties represent the most important explanatory variable of return-migrations. In other words, the larger the household they left, the greater the number of potential relatives living in the village, the greater the chances for the out-migrants to return. The same was true if they left their parents in the village, i.e., if they had the opportunity to find them again upon their return. In other words, return-migrants had important family ties. Third, a medium-term analysis showed that the stability of the returnmigrants was relative. Only the youngest, those who returned to the village before age of 15, had a real chance to remain in the locality.

The Growth of the Consultation Economy in the Netherlands and Belgium: a Survey of the Evolution of Research
This article presents a comparative survey of the literature on the 'consultation economy' (the national consultation arrangements between government, employers and employees) in the Netherlands and Belgium. Social scientists were the first to research this topic which resulted in an extensive body of literature. We distinguish between three research traditions (focusing on outcome, process, and the relationship between consultation and economic performance). All three are synchronic approaches that attempt to explain the specific situation. We argue that historians add a more diachronic perspective, which makes it possible to explain why the Netherlands and Belgium have developed different consultative institutions. Until recently, historians have only researched the consultation economy indirectly (e.g. by investigating economic policy or pillarisation). In the conclusion of this article we briefly describe our research project which precisely focuses on the development of the Belgian and Dutch consultation economies, making use of various concepts and theories from the literature.

Debate: The Gifts of Athena: Historical Origins of the Knowledge Economy
In dit discussiedossier staat het recente werk van Joel Mokyr, The Gifts of Athena: Historical Origins of the Knowledge Economy (Princeton 2002) centraal.
